From our local rebels:
As the lockdown begins to ease, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council are considering ways to encourage walking and cycling, and reduce car traffic and air pollution.
We want to show support for the councils’ suggested measures, and encourage them to work together to prevent a return to pre lockdown levels of traffic and air pollution. We want to show that people support the councils’ suggested measures, and that the time is right for decisive action. We will be chalking our ideas on the city’s pavements and roads, and taking to our bikes, safely, to model the future we want to see.
In this action, we will be getting back into gear (pun intended), as we get back into action in new, socially distanced modes.
#build back better
#clean air, healthy lungs
#more bikes, fewer cars
#fewer cars, more space for people
#healthy lungs, healthy planet
How you can take part in this action:
1. Thursday 28th / Friday 29th May: Prior to the bike action on Saturday 30th, chalk your ideas on roads or pavements near your home – think of places where you would like to see new bike lanes, wider pavements, pedestrianized streets, ‘low traffic’ neighbourhoods, and chalk your requests on the road / pavements. Take photos and share on Facebook or on the Oxford Rebels WhatsApp group. NB please be aware that chalking is technically criminal damage.
2. Saturday 20th May, 2 – 4pm:
a. Solo / family action: Go for a bike ride alone or with others in your household. Make yourself a flag with your ‘build back better’ message on. Take a photo and share on social media. Tweet your city and county councillors.
