From our friends at Replenish:
Come along to a day-long workshop to find out how you can get involved with creating an ‘escape room’ that will encourage people to reduce their food waste. Once created, the game will go on tour around Oxfordshire!
What is an escape room?
An escape room is a game in which players are locked in a room. Their only goal is to escape the room before time runs out, and in order to do this, they must work together to solve a series of puzzles and challenges! These games can be used for educational purposes, to raise awareness around serious issues in an engaging and memorable way.
How can I get involved?
No experience is required. The whole games design process will take between 4-6 months. After the initial planning session, participants will co-create the game from start to finish with support from an experienced escape room designer.
Participants will need to commit ~1 hour a week over the whole process.
Why focus on food waste?
More than a third of food is wasted and almost 70% of this happens at home. Not only does this have a considerable impact on the environment, but it also costs the average household over £800 a year! Our game will aim to get people thinking about the issue and find ways to waste less.
I can’t make the workshop – can I still get involved?
While we’d ideally like participants to attend the first session, if you can’t come and are really keen to get involved, get in touch!
About the facilitator:
Laure Duchamp specialises in escape games that have an educational purpose, also known as Serious Escape Games (SEG). Former student in Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Philosophy of Science, her passion has always been to transmit knowledge. She is convinced that people learn better when they are active and their emotions are solicited, and that games are a powerful tool for raising awareness of issues.
Earlier this year she designed a SEG focussing on scientific discoveries that contributed to the development of cinema, which is being used as an educational tool in secondary schools and will soon go on tour throughout France.
Previously, she led a team in designing a game on creativity and decision making that won the 2017 Serious Escape Game Award for Educational Innovation.
About the project:
This project is being supported by Replenish, a scheme funded by Oxfordshire County Council to reduce domestic food waste and promote composting across the county. For more information, visit https://cagoxfordshire.org.uk/replenish/
