Over 230 people joined an Oxfordshire CEE Bill Alliance event on Friday evening over Zoom, for a discussion of whether the UK can lead on climate change (‘The CEE Bill and our future‘). If you missed it, you can watch it below.
What’s the CEE Bill?
The Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill is a Private Members’ Bill, and taking it through parliament will be a hard-fought process but it has been done before with major climate legislation. It is an alliance bill that has been written by scientists, lawyers and activists; it is gathering support from a broad range of campaign groups, businesses, charities and individuals. The bill has the potential to become the most significant move forward since the Climate Change Act 2008. Here’s a short video which explains what it is and why it is needed:
Can the UK lead on climate change? The CEE Bill and our future
The event was hosted by the Oxfordshire CEE Bill Alliance, which LCWO joined last week, and was in collaboration with Oxford Human Rights Festival, CENDEP and Oxford Brookes University.
LCWO’s Statement of Support for the Oxfordshire CEE Bill Alliance:
Low Carbon West Oxford welcomes the CEE Private Members Bill and is pleased to join the Oxfordshire CEE Bill Alliance to support the Bill. This alliance bill has been written by scientists, lawyers and activists. It is crucial that our government takes action NOW, and addresses climate change fast and fairly. There is still time, if we ACT Now.
The panelists were EJ Fawcett, Clare Shakya, Nick Eyre, Estelle Bailey, Charles Secrett, Jane King, and Mike Barry, and Layla Moran and Anneliese Dodds joined the call for the Q&A. You can get a feel for the event from this funky visual representation by Imogen Foxell:
