Rise and shine and join bird expert Dominic Woodfield for a guided walk, listening to the Dawn Chorus in some of West Oxford’s wilder places.
We will meet at Kingfisher Corner (by the Helen Road bridge to Botley Park) at 5am and take in what we can hear and see there before moving on, following our ears to see how many different species we can find, and how many of our expected summer visitors have arrived. Will will return to Kingfisher Corner for 7am. It’s still early spring so it’s advisable to dress warmly and wear waterproof footwear: even if it’s not wet it may well be dewy.
Dominic managed to turn a duffle-coated childhood obsession into a career and has now been a professional ecologist for coming up to twenty five years. Although he’s an all-round naturalist, his first love was birds and he has never quite lost the habit of being unable to maintain conversations out of doors without his eyes darting about at flying distractions, or at some sound from the undergrowth. As well as sober scientific surveys he does occasional guided walks, including his ever-popular ‘Sensing Nature’ walk at Wood festival where he gets unsuspecting participants to eat grasses, sing along with birds and identify trees with their eyes closed. He lives in East Oxford with his partner, ten year old daughter and six year old son.
